History of the Iowa Able Program

Since its inception in 1998, the Iowa Able Foundation has been offering loans to Iowans who need to purchase assistive technology such as specialized computers or software, wheelchairs, communication devices, home modifications, vehicle modifications and other devices. The program was revitalized in 2004 due to a federal grant received from the U.S. Department of Education.

The Iowa Able loan program provides the opportunity for individuals to receive a loan who might not otherwise be approved through traditional sources based on lack of credit or poor or no credit history. The program and the Iowa Able Foundation were developed by the Iowa Program for Assistive Technology, Iowa's statewide systems change project on assistive technology. The first loans were made in September of 1998.

Many aspects of the lending program have changed with the 2004 revitalization. However, the program goals remain unchanged: To provide access to assistive technology for all Iowans who need it so they can live more independent and productive lives.
